Family Intensive Treatment

The Family Intensive Treatment (FIT) Program

WHAT is this?

FIT is a short-term, intensive outpatient treatment program.  It's a mindfulness-based, solutions-oriented, and skill-building approach to psychotherapy.

The FIT program is designed to improve your child's mental health and fitness as soon as possible.  To do that, we'll need everyone working together, in a conscious and concentrated way.  Hence, Family Intensive Treatment!

We'll focus primarily on helping your child replace negative thoughts and behavior patterns with more adaptive coping skills.  Because no matter what emotional challenges they're going through, the key to strengthening their mental health - and to relieving their suffering -  is to strengthen their Self-Regulation.

We'll also focus on you changing your habitual ways of reacting, right alongside your child.  Because the key to developing emotional regulation and resilience in children is to strengthen the Co-Regulation relationships with their caregivers.

At the core of this mental health treatment is the Mindful Solutions Approach [TM] - which integrates cognitive-behavioral therapies (CBT, DBT, ACT) with mindfulness and compassion practices.

Finally, we'll tailor the treatment to FIT your child's specific needs.  That is, we'll find Mindful Solutions for your child's particular difficulties, including: ADHD, ASD, OCD, Anxiety, Depression, Anger Management, Behavior Problems, or other significant Life Stressors.

WHY this intensive thing?

Several reasons.

(1) By the time you get to me, you've probably been waiting a long time for help.  I want you to get that help, and that relief, as soon as possible.

(2) Research shows that people are more motivated for change at the beginning of therapy and that a high percentage of treatment gains occur in the first 6-8 weeks. You're more open to new ideas and more willing to practice different behaviors.

BTW - practicing different behavior choices is at the crux of our treatment here.  I can teach you, encourage you, support and challenge you all day long (which I will), but that gets us nowhere without you and your child actually doing things differently.

Remember, one definition of INSANITY is... doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results!

(3) An intensive, short-term treatment model also allows me to get to other kids on the waiting list who are suffering due to a shortage of high-quality child mental health clinicians.

So, I work with clients who are ready, willing, and able to commit some serious time and energy up front.  I think you'll get more bang for your buck that way.  And I really want you to make as much progress as possible.

Finally, don't worry.  Once you complete the FIT program, I won't just drop you out of care altogether.  That's what the Follow-up Therapeutic Coaching sessions are for - to provide you with a safety net and booster sessions, for as long as needed.

HOW does this work?

The FIT program is intended to help you and your child get immediate symptom relief and to begin making real changes in your daily life.

To do so, you'll need to commit to about 10 therapy hours, as well as daily practices, over the course of 6-8 weeks.  Typically this involves a combination of parent, child, and family sessions.

You and your child will also have work to do outside of sessions.  For this, I've developed an online toolkit with instructional videos, guided practices, a personal playbook, and additional resources to strengthen skill development.

I'll provide therapeutic coaching that combines both empathy and accountability - compassionate understanding and clear direction - to guide you in your journey. Along the way, I promise a journey filled with love, laughter, and learning.

REMINDER: This treatment program is ONLY AVAILABLE to patients who have completed an Initial Consultation with Dr. Montminy and have been approved for the program.
